Local pupils celebrate Scots

ON Friday, March 7, the annual Celebration of Scots Language and Culture Primary School Competition took place at Galashiels Academy. All schools in Galashiels and the surrounding area took part and entered children in the written and the recital parts of the event. The event is supported by The Galashiels Burns Club who supply the certificates and prizes with thanks to Douglas Watts and Russell Robertson. The standard of entries made the Judging a difficult task for Mr Alan Sleater, Principal Teacher of English at the Academy; Grant Lees, Past President of the Burns Club; and Keith Cowan , President of the Burns Club.

The winners of the writing competition were as follows -

Primary 1-3: 1st, Maya Troczynska - St Margaret’s R.C Primary School; 2nd, Courtney Duncan - Burgh Primary School; 3rd, Sam Glennon - Stow Primary School.
Primary 4-5: 1st, Molly Darling - St Peter’s Primary School; 2nd, Louis Mackenzie - Stow Primary School; 3rd, Paddy Lynch - Clovenfords Primary School. Primary 6-7: 1st, Casey Bunker - St Peter’s Primary School; 2nd, Meghan Campbell - Burgh Primary School; 3rd, Zara Elliot - Clovenfords Primary School.

The winners of the recital competition were -

Primary 1-3: 1st, Tom Firth - Fountainhall Primary School; 2nd, Evie Renwick - St Peter’s Primary School; 3rd, Claire Webster - Burgh Primary School. Primary 4-5: 1st, Joshua Miller - Glendinning Primary School; 2nd, Mya Lamb - Burgh Primary School; 3rd, Katie-Jane Saunders - St Peter’s Primary School. Primary 6-7: 1st, Ryan Woodburn - Clovenfords Primary School; 2nd, Lauren Hume - St Peter’s Primary School; 3rd, Talia Pettitt - Heriot Primary School.
